Hi! I’m Leandra, the Activities Director at Arcadia Retirement Village and I hold my role as a great responsibility. Activities for me go well beyond the activity room and into the daily lives of residents. From social interaction to maintaining daily living skills, I have the chance to invest happiness in each of the residents that live in our home. When I was younger, my Aunt Linda told me the secret to happiness. She said that everyone needed something to do and something to look forward to. It is this secret that lies at the core of the activity program that I provide the residents of Arcadia Retirement Village. We celebrate the life we have and find ways to enrich it within our home.
Veterans:
We celebrate every Veteran that comes to our home. We are currently working on a project in which we are registering all of our Veterans at the Arcadia Historical Museum. The curator Dana Dunn was delightfully surprised to discover that Dorthy Hauser, a resident at Arcadia Retirement Village was a founder of the Veteran’s project at the museum. We all took a trip to the museum to meet her. We hold high respect for the service our Veterans have given for our country. We hold services on Veterans Day, Memorial Day, and Flag Day and we are currently working on a project to line the walls of our building with photographs of the men and woman that have given so much for our country.
Monthly Family Events:
Every month we celebrate with friends and family with our monthly family events. From summer luaus to candlelight dinners, to Thanksgiving dinner, these dinners have a wide variety of entertainers and delicious food! For example, pictured above is the Mediterranean dinner we created for our Fathers on Father’s Day! The enjoyed the Persian dancer Margurite with live music and delicious hummus and chicken kabobs. These dinners give our residents something to look forward and much needed family time!
Bringing the World to the Residents:
Our latest adventure has been providing monthly culture days. Many of our residents cannot travel the world any longer but that does not stop us from bringing the world to the residents. Once a month we have been exploring a different region of the world, immersing our residents in the culture by providing examples of fashion, culture, and of course food! Our entire staff joins in on these projects, including administrator Rajni, who dressed me up in a sari for the residents before cooking delicious Indian food for the residents.
Arcadia’s Got Talent:
Although we adore bringing entertainers for our events, sometimes we find that the major talent dwells right in our building. Our monthly talent show brings together our residents, volunteers, family members, and staff and builds relationships in our community. We have discovered our residents have all sorts of hidden talents but the greatest surprises have come from our staff! From magic acts to tangos, everyone gives there all and the winner walks away with fresh roses!
Outdoor Activities:
It is very important for residents that can do their own shopping should continue to do so. It is for this reason that we provide a shopping schedule including transportation that allows are residents access to shopping once a week.
We also have weekly outings. These outings include going to lunch, picnics in the park, trips to museums, movies, library outings, trips to the beach, and even casinos. These outdoor activities are something for the residents to look forward to and get excited about. Placing flyers announcing the event and talking about the upcoming activities helps create anticipation for the trips that we are going to take. Outdoor activities also keep independent residents active. There has yet to be an adventure we have not enjoyed.
